Let's start with the basics, what is composite decking?

Composite decking is a type of decking material made from a combination of wood fibers or sawdust and plastic. This material is designed to mimic the look and feel of traditional wood, but with additional benefits such as durability, low maintenance, and resistance to rot, insect damage, and fading.

Composite decking usually consists of a mixture of recycled or virgin plastics, wood particles, and other additives such as pigments and stabilizers. These components are mixed together, heated, and formed into planks or tiles. The end result is a strong, long-lasting, and low-maintenance decking option that is available in a variety of colors and finishes. Additionally, composite decking is a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to wood because it is made with recycled materials.

Who makes composite?

There are many companies that offer composite solutions with many styles of planks and colors. Below is a top list of major brands that offer composite decking planks:

1. Trex composite

2. Timbertech

3. Fiberon

4. MoistureShield

5. AZEK - Timbertech

6. Capped composite decking

7. Dura-Life

8. Infinity Futura

9. Endeck

10. Evergrain.

What are the positives & negatives of composite decking?

Here are some positives of using composite decking:

1. Low maintenance: Unlike wood decking, composite decking requires minimal maintenance, making it a popular choice for busy homeowners. It does not require staining, sealing, or painting, and can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

2. Durability: Composite decking is highly resistant to rot, insect damage, and weathering. It does not splinter, crack, or warp, and it can last much longer than wood decking.

3. Eco-friendly: Many composite decking brands contain recycled materials like plastic bags and wood fibers, making it an eco-friendly choice.

4. Aesthetics: Composite decking comes in a variety of colors, grains, and patterns that can mimic the look of wood or offer a modern, sleek aesthetic to any outdoor space.

5. Safety: Composite decking is less likely to cause slipping and tripping hazards compared to wood decks, particularly when wet or exposed to moisture.

Overall, composite decking can be an excellent investment that gives you a beautiful, durable, low-maintenance outdoor space that will last for many years.

Here are some negatives of installing composite decking:

1. Initial cost: Composite decking can be more expensive than traditional wood decking, particularly if you opt for a high-end brand or deck design. However, it's important to consider the long-term savings on maintenance and replacement costs.

2. Heat retention: In direct sunlight, some composite decking can become hot to the touch, making it uncomfortable to walk on with bare feet.

3. Susceptible to stains: While composite decking is more resistant to stains than wood, it is not completely impervious to them. It is important to clean up spills as soon as possible to prevent staining.

4. Not completely natural-looking: Some people prefer the look and texture of natural wood, and may feel that composite decking looks too artificial or plastic.

Overall, composite decking can be a great choice for many homeowners, but it's important to consider both the positives and negatives before making a decision.

Do Big Box Stores carry composite decking?

Yes they do, big box home stores do indeed carry composite flooring.

Now, the difference is what is on the shelf and ready to pick up versus what they can order for you.

You may see stores like Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards carry composite decking on the shelving but very limited stock. By limited stock I mean board lengths and sizing. Please know that these stores are able to order you anything you need as special order and have it delivered. You may need some help deciding how much material is needed. While this is half the battle is correct material count, the other battle is installing the materials. I often see customers call me shortly after attempting to install composite or railing and falling short. When a professional does a deck, they know exactly what is needed, different lengths and counts of boards.

Overall, ask the stores what they can order because most of the times they can order any composite decking that is needed. While this is true with Big Box stores, contractors usually work and deal with their local lumber yards that have relationships with contractors.

Do I need to hire a professional to install composite decking?

There are several reasons why you should hire a contractor to install composite decking:

1. Experience: A professional contractor will have the skills and experience needed to install composite decking correctly, ensuring that it is level, secure, and meets all local building codes.

2. Time-saving: Deck installation can be time-consuming and requires specialized tools and equipment. By hiring a contractor, you can save yourself time and effort, as well as ensure a professional-quality installation.

3. Liability: Contractors have liability insurance to protect you and your property in case something goes wrong during the installation process.

4. Expert guidance: A contractor can give you expert advice on the best materials, design, and features for your composite deck, helping you make an informed decision that meets your needs and budget.

5. Warranty: Most composite decking companies offer a warranty on their products when it is professionally installed by a licensed contractor, so you can have peace of mind knowing that your investment is protected.

Overall, hiring a contractor to install your composite decking is highly recommended to ensure that your deck is installed safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to your daily life.

Will a new deck frame be required for composite decking installation?

Majority of my cases if not all, the answer is no. There have been instances on a very very old deck frame (1982) I have added additional joists to support the extra weight that is about it, that was not only my opinion but the city inspectors' as well.

I am not saying that a new frame is completely not necessary. If a deck has been neglected for a long time and needs major repairs, putting composite on top without paying attention to the frame would not work at all, safety and integrity-wise.

A professional installing composite decking needs to observe multiple areas before installing, this is before city inspectors take a look:

  1. Make sure your spacing between joists is sufficient for composite decking.

  2. Are the posts sitting on footings correctly? Is there a sufficient amount of posts?

  3. There should be hangers on each joist with nails NOT sticking out.

  4. Is the cantilever proper and not over 2'?

  5. Is the staircase such as stringers need to be new and recut with new lumber? Are they shaky?

How long does composite decking last?

Composite decking has a longer lifespan than traditional wood decking. The exact lifespan of composite decking depends on the quality of the material and the conditions it is exposed to. In general, composite decking lasts between 25 and 30 years with proper maintenance and care. However, some high-quality composite decking brands can last over 50 years. Factors that can affect the lifespan of composite decking include sun exposure, temperature changes, moisture, and foot traffic. Additionally, regular cleaning and maintenance can help extend the lifespan of your composite decking.

Composite decking has been becoming more and more popular as a decking option in the last decade. There are tons of options available such as colors and installation practices.

I have a deck, where do I start?

Your deck is not required to be old and unstable to switch to composite decking. We build new decks with composite floor and railing right off the bat. There is no right or wrong time to install composite. From new decks to aged, composite can be installed.

What I do is, come see the deck in person it answers a lot of questions.

If the deck is old I inspect the framing and staircase and determine what extras if any are needed to secure the frame. The old floor boards and old railing is taken off, exposing the frame. New composite flooring is installed whether straight or picture frame style. Old floor and railing are discarded by the professional and the job is done. Well there is more to it, but in a nutshell.

It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation, as the specifics may vary depending on the brand and type of composite decking you have. Additionally, it's always a good idea to hire a professional contractor for deck installation to ensure proper alignment and construction techniques to avoid issues.
